Not All Mice Are the Same!
You might think a mouse is just a mouse. But in the UK, there are several species, and knowing which one you’ve got is crucial for effective pest control. Here’s the lowdown on the two main culprits:
House Mouse (Mus domesticus)
Colour: Grey-brown fur, slightly lighter underneath
Size: Very small, with a tail around 80% of body length
Habitat: Prefers living indoors, especially in urban areas. Rarely needs to venture outside in the UK climate.
Personality: Highly intelligent, suspicious of new objects (including traps), and exceptionally good at hiding.
Fun fact: So small that they sometimes don’t trigger conventional mouse traps!
House mice are often the reason for scratching sounds in lofts, wall cavities or under floorboards in homes and businesses.
Long-Tailed Field Mouse (Wood Mouse) (Apodemus sylvaticus)
Colour: Chestnut brown with a white belly
Size: Larger than house mice, with noticeably bulging eyes and big ears
Tail: Roughly the same length as its body
Habitat: Loves the countryside, but may sneak into buildings in rural areas, especially in colder months
Personality: Less clever than house mice—easier to catch!
While wood mice mostly live outdoors, they’ll come inside seeking shelter, especially when the weather turns chilly.
EXCELLENT Based on 84 reviews Posted on Terri JenningsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I contacted Kevin because there were rats in my garden. He came round the following day and inspected the garden looking for nests. He put bait in several places and even set up a camera. A week later he put new bait down and then after another week, came back. The bait hadn't been touched this time, indicating the rats had been dealt with. He was very professional, and did a great job. I'd definitely use him again (but hope I won't need to).Posted on Becky FrenchTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I messaged this company as bugs in my kitchen over last 4 weeks have been driving me mad & our local council/pest control did not help or confirm what they were. I am not local to this company as in Scotland and took a shot at messaging for advice. He came back straight away which then led me to find the area they were coming from and type of bug. We thought all along we had biscuit beetle, however after finding the colony (I think) & cleaning the area .. it’s actually woodworm. His advice was top notch & can’t thank him enough!Posted on Kate LilyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent service. Friendly gentleman. Rodent problem solved. Would 100% use again if I need to. Thank you for an excellent easy service.Posted on Estephania Fernandez SotoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can’t thank Kev enough. He thoroughly checked my home to see if I had bed bugs, unlike another company that was ready to treat without even inspecting. Kev didn’t find any evidence, didn’t charge me a penny for the inspection, and instead gave me honest advice and suggested traps to monitor the situation. He was professional, kind, and extremely helpful. I’m really happy with his service and would highly recommend him.Posted on Kate KnipeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Kevin was quick to respond and provided a great service, sorted the issue out super quickPosted on Jackie GrundyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing service, helped us immensely when no other people did. Would recommend every time.Posted on Anthony McDadeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Recently had Kevin come sort my mouse issue, he was fantastic and extremely professional. I'm autistic and struggle with people coming around mine especially when they don't communicate/come late. Anytime I messaged Kevin I had a response within the hour and he was always on time, even when I needed to change to time and day on a short notice. I assume he's also a good chef as the mice loved the food so much they've now gone to find the restaurant 🙏🙏Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. Signs You Might Have a Mouse Problem
Here’s what to watch out for:
- Small gnawed holes in food packaging, skirting boards or walls
- Droppings: Small, dark pellets (House mice leave tinier droppings than field mice)
- Tracks and runs: Well-worn paths along walls and behind appliances
- Smear marks: Greasy streaks left where mice brush against walls
- Scratching or gnawing sounds in cavities, lofts or under floors
- Nests: Soft, shredded materials tucked into quiet corners
- Dead or live mice sightings (the ultimate giveaway!)
