Meet the Culprits: Wasps and Hornets
Both wasps and hornets are instantly recognisable, but they each have their own quirks and habits.
Wasps
Appearance: Yellow and black stripes, narrow “waist,” measuring around 10–15mm long.
Diet: Sweet tooth for sugary drinks, fruit, jam, and anything else on your picnic table.
Behaviour:
Queen wasps hibernate through winter and start new nests in spring.
Worker wasps forage for over a mile to find food.
A single nest can produce up to 30,000 wasps in a single year.
Peak problem months: July to September, when wasps become particularly bold and aggressive in search of sugar.
Fun fact: Despite their bad reputation, wasps do play a role in controlling other insects, just not in your kitchen!
Hornet
Appearance: Larger and bulkier than wasps, with a deeper buzzing sound. Can look quite menacing due to their size.
Behaviour:
The European Hornet is the most common in the UK.
Typically nests in tree trunks in woodlands, but occasionally builds nests around homes.
Often flies into houses at dusk, attracted by lights.
Temperament: Generally less aggressive than wasps unless disturbed, but their sting can be more painful.
While hornets might look scarier, they’re usually less interested in raiding your picnic.
EXCELLENT Based on 84 reviews Posted on Terri JenningsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I contacted Kevin because there were rats in my garden. He came round the following day and inspected the garden looking for nests. He put bait in several places and even set up a camera. A week later he put new bait down and then after another week, came back. The bait hadn't been touched this time, indicating the rats had been dealt with. He was very professional, and did a great job. I'd definitely use him again (but hope I won't need to).Posted on Becky FrenchTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I messaged this company as bugs in my kitchen over last 4 weeks have been driving me mad & our local council/pest control did not help or confirm what they were. I am not local to this company as in Scotland and took a shot at messaging for advice. He came back straight away which then led me to find the area they were coming from and type of bug. We thought all along we had biscuit beetle, however after finding the colony (I think) & cleaning the area .. it’s actually woodworm. His advice was top notch & can’t thank him enough!Posted on Kate LilyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent service. Friendly gentleman. Rodent problem solved. Would 100% use again if I need to. Thank you for an excellent easy service.Posted on Estephania Fernandez SotoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can’t thank Kev enough. He thoroughly checked my home to see if I had bed bugs, unlike another company that was ready to treat without even inspecting. Kev didn’t find any evidence, didn’t charge me a penny for the inspection, and instead gave me honest advice and suggested traps to monitor the situation. He was professional, kind, and extremely helpful. I’m really happy with his service and would highly recommend him.Posted on Kate KnipeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Kevin was quick to respond and provided a great service, sorted the issue out super quickPosted on Jackie GrundyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing service, helped us immensely when no other people did. Would recommend every time.Posted on Anthony McDadeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Recently had Kevin come sort my mouse issue, he was fantastic and extremely professional. I'm autistic and struggle with people coming around mine especially when they don't communicate/come late. Anytime I messaged Kevin I had a response within the hour and he was always on time, even when I needed to change to time and day on a short notice. I assume he's also a good chef as the mice loved the food so much they've now gone to find the restaurant 🙏🙏Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. How KV Pest Control Handles Wasp And Hornet Pest Control
At KV Pest Control, we prioritise safety—for you, your family, and our team. Here’s how we deal with these stinging invaders:
Step 1:
Careful Inspection
Assess risks and plan the safest approach for removal.
Step 2:
Safe Treatment
Apply a chemical powder via a dust applicator directly into the nest.
The powder quickly spreads throughout the nest, killing the insects.
Within a few hours, the nest usually dies off, and any surviving wasps or hornets will disperse.
Step 3:
Follow-Up Advice
Discuss proofing solutions where possible.
Provide peace of mind that your property is safe and sting-free.
Most nests require only one visit, but we’re always ready to return if needed.
